Picked a Presentation Topic? Here’s What to do Next.
▶ Find credible sources to dig deeper:
To build out your talk and gather supporting material, you need to find reliable sources. Respected tech news outlets, such as IEEE Spectrum, ScienceDaily (tech), Wired, or TechRadar are a good start.
You can also check out the tech section of any big news website. The BBC, for example, covers tech-related articles regularly on its dedicated ‘BBC tech news’ page, as does NBC.
Occasionally, you’ll find a dedicated niche website that covers certain topics, such as The Robot Report or The Quantum Insider. These are good options too.
And finally, you have YouTube lectures uploaded by companies, universities or experts that can help you dive deeper into the topic.
▶ Decide what to include (and exclude):
The tricky part about presenting a technical topic is that your audience can quickly go from “how fascinating!” to “um, you lost me”.
You’ll need to decide on how broad or deep you go with your topic, based on who you’re speaking to. I recommend performing an audience analysis to really understand what messaging will land with your audience — and what won’t.
▶ Choose a presentation style:
Should your talk be informative or persuasive? An informative presentation imparts knowledge to your audience. These typically look like: ‘what is X and how does it work’, ‘the history of X’, step-by-step guides or a list. Whereas, persuasive presentations share a unique perspective (yours or a leading view in the field).
Both styles are compatible with technical presentations. Pick one based on your audience and your comfort level with the topic.
▶ Outline your presentation:
Let’s start building out your talk. Choose from any of these 8 story structures to outline your presentation. You can keep it as simple as ‘main point & 3 sub-points’ or go for something more involved such as ‘problem-challenge-solution’.
The key here is to choose a structure that will make it easy for you to remember the flow of your talk, and for your audience to follow along.
